Park96 Mission Statement

To maintain and continuously improve Park96 as a first-rate facility offering recreational opportunities, cultural enrichment, and entertainment services for the enjoyment of Parkland residents.

Land Acknowledgement

Acknowledging the land in which we are situated is happening more frequently than ever before. Stemming from stories of the land that span generations, it is a traditional custom of Indigenous people that dates back centuries when welcoming outsiders onto their land and into their homes.

Calgary Foundation believes in the intention of acknowledging the land not only as an act of reconciliation, awareness or inclusion but as an act that builds upon community and honors the authentic history of Turtle Island and the original people of this land.1

The greeting the Federation of Calgary Communities uses at its meetings, conferences, workshops, events and other community occasions is the same as one used by The City of Calgary. We encourage our communities to use the land acknowledgement greeting with intention and respect for the land they are situated on.

“I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the traditional territories of the peoples of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta, which includes the Blackfoot First Nation tribes of Siksika, the Piikuni, the Kainai, the Stoney Nakoda First Nations tribes of Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Wesley and the Tsuut’ina First Nation. The city of Calgary is also homeland to the historic Northwest Métis and to Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3.“

The phonetic pronunciation for the difficult ones are:
Piikuni – Pee-kah-nee
Siksika – Seeg-see-kah (emphasis on kah) (g/k almost sound the same) Kainai – G-ai-nah (g and k almost sound the same)
Tsuut’ina – Soot-tenna Chiniki – Chin-ick-ee

The pronunciation was confirmed by Evelyn Goodstriker, past Chair of CAUAC.

History of the Park

Did you know Park96 got its name from being on Lot 96?  Keith Construction signed over the property rights of Lot 96 on October 22, 1974 to the residents and the Parkland Community Centre (Calgary) Ltd was born.  The Parkland Community Centre (Calgary) Ltd. doesn’t flow off the tongue and we will never know who the first person to utter Park96 was but we are grateful we are affectionately known as Park96,

In its 50 year history, Park96 has evolved from a pure green space to hosting tennis, pickleball volleyball and basketball courts, 18 hole disc golf course, playgrounds and splash park, cookhouses, 2 outdoor music stages, toboggan hill and lots of spots for a picnic and lawn games.

The People

Park96 is managed by an elected Board of Directors of up to 15 members.  We meet at 7:00pm on the fourth Tuesday of each month.  As a Park96 Member in Good Standing, you are welcome to join us at any of the meetings with prior notification.  Members with questions or concerns are invited to attend these meetings and can be placed on the agenda, just contact park96@telus.net and you will be put in contact with the Volunteer Board President.

We are a volunteer working board, championing events, creating visions of the Park for the future and organizing Summerfest, an event to rival any community event in the universe.  If you want to get more involved in the Parkland Community there are many opportunities, such as volunteering to help run various programs, events, pub nights etc.  If you are interested in volunteering or have suggestions, please email the Park Office park96@telus.net

Park96 is led by the Park General Manager and runs the Park with an exceptional team including the Office Manager, Operations Team Lead and depending on the season between 3-5 support staff. The Board and staff work together to ensure the community directives are being carried out in accordance with the Articles of Association.
